| Comment | These infrequently found katazome indigo dyed hemp garments are treasured today as unique survivors of a once ubiquitous but now lost handmade folk textile mingei (people's) craft. This hemp noragi farmers garment was locally fashioned in the colder mountainous regions of Tohoku, Northern Japan. Even thought cotton fabrics by the 1800s were common throughout Japan, some remote impoverished rural areas still produced homespun hemp fabrics in order to fashion low cost utilitarian garments such as the one seen here. The people who resided in these areas were either too poor to purchase cotton fabrics or their villages were too remote and difficult for the cotton traders to reach. Or perhaps, this person preferred the cooler hemp over cotton. |
