The momohiki were designed to fit tightly around the legs, similar to leggings. They have open upper sides
that close around the hips to form the seat when the long ties that act as an adjustable belt are tied
together. The wearer used an undergarment and an overgarment, perhaps a hanten jacket or kimono, with the momohiki. Momohiki was a common garment among farm women and shop men during the 1800s and early 1900s. It was worn by men and women. A woman's momohiki tended to be decorative, often showing sashiko stitching and somewhat better construction.
